Few places on Earth concentrate as much birdlife as the cloud forests ringing Cusco. Descend a single valley and you move from high-Andean tanagers to hummingbird-filled gardens — a vertical ladder of biodiversity that rewards the patient photographer.
In this guide we share the routes, seasons, and field craft our guides rely on to put the Andean cock-of-the-rock, and dozens of other species, squarely in your frame.
When to Go
The dry season (May–September) offers clearer mornings and reliable lek activity, while the wet months bring lush foliage and a different cast of migrants. Both have merit — your target species should decide your dates.
"The cloud forest doesn't give up its birds quickly. It gives them up to those who wait."
Where to Look
Cock-of-the-rock leks are best at first light, when males display in flashes of crimson. Position yourself early, keep silhouettes low, and let the birds come to you.
